Job security should always be considered when pursuing a career. Will the job you’re doing today be relevant—or even necessary—tomorrow?
Thankfully, if you’re looking into becoming an HVAC tech, you don’t need to have any fear about the future.
Job Outlook For HVAC Technicians
The HVAC technician job outlook is projected to grow at 13 percent from now until 2028, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. To put that number into perspective, there were 367,900 HVAC technicians employed in 2018, and that’s expected to increase to 414,200 by 2028.
Why? Climate control for both residential and commercial buildings is becoming more sophisticated. And as we move toward a greener, more energy-efficient lifestyle, old climate control units are going to need to be retrofitted, upgraded, or replaced to be kept up to code.
Not to mention, the life expectancy of an HVAC unit is only between 10-15 years, meaning repairs or replacement will have to happen at some point.
Job Prospects For Techs
Job possibilities are excellent for qualified HVAC technicians. If you know your way around a tablet/computer, can install and repair equipment, and have fantastic troubleshooting skills, then you are highly marketable.
Employers are having a difficult time finding skilled HVAC technicians who are capable of handling the installation, maintenance, and repairs of the new types of HVAC systems. If you know more than just installation, then you’ll have an easier time finding a job. When new construction growth slows, you’ll need to know how to repair equipment to have a consistent work.
Homeowners will always need repairs on their HVAC units, so a career as an HVAC technician is relatively recession-proof. As long as people can afford their homes, they will put money into them to keep the heating and cooling systems running comfortably.
Long Live The HVAC Career
So, if you’re looking for a career that is here to stay, consider becoming an HVAC technician—start by finding classes near you. You won’t be replaced by robots, and your skills will be in demand on the regular.
